Gig Poster
Project type
Poster
Date
March 2023
When starting this project, it was a lot more complicated than I initially thought. With a lot of other projects, there are usually straightforward guidelines with lots of rules involved. To some extent, I feel like I thrive with some structure but I thought that this project was a really good challenge for me and has helped me develop some creative ideas and makes me feel confident that I can create better digital art. The objective of this project was to create a gig poster for a band and determine a name for it. The instructions that were given were very minimal but I'm really happy with how my project has turned out and what I've done with the prompt.
Initial Sketches and Ideas
The first step I took was to start sketching initially I wasn't sure what I wanted but the three things that I was sure of were that I wanted to do an indie pop band, with something warm or iridescent involved, and something that felt old but new and subverted usual expectations. I got to the sketching and I wasn't sure what I wanted there are a lot of different sketches on here that show some ideas that I initially thought or developed but nothing felt right. I eventually started my project and scrapped the whole thing it was bad it didn't make any sense and then I went back to sketching again I finally came up with this one sketch presented here and I decided to run with it.
The concept for this poster was that there are objects from Earth that felt familiar and comfortable but we're glowing and creating new things around the world and creating new ways to look at the world or in this case space. Initially, I thought I would put the band on the TV and would have the earth on the poster but I thought that this was overcomplicated and felt busy and overcrowded.
I received some feedback on my poster and found that I needed to fix my ratios and make sure that I was using either rule of thirds or the 1/2 rule and I needed to make sure that colors were contrasting and that everything felt very cohesive or very contrasting. I fixed the rule of thirds quickly and decided to take the earth out because it was taking up too much space. I'm moving the moon down I was able to get a better amount of space so you can feel the vastness of it.
However, I struggled with how to make appropriate contrast between what the TV is doing and the actual things that are happening around it. I would often go to Pinterest and I found a lot of old ads that gave me the idea to add some very classic colors. I decided to implement that into my design. As you can see around the glow there is a very monochromatic feel but as soon as you get the glow from the TV all of the sudden we have these bright bursting colors and it goes with the band name that references lethal color.
I'm happy with how this poster turned out and I'm glad to see that even if there aren't many rules that I have to stick to I can still create something beautiful and create something that I feel proud of. I know my poster met the expectations that were asked by making sure that I made a gig for a band and I included a band name dates and where it will be. In the end, I'm really happy with how this turned out and I can't wait for the next project.
